Vetrans_MemorialVeterans Memorial May 30 Dedication Ceremony Plans

After years of planning and construction, the dedication of the Area Veterans Memorial in Heron Lake is fast approaching.  US Congressman Tim Walz will be the featured speaker for the event, scheduled Monday, May 30 at 1:30pm.

The Herbert K Kellam Post 224, along with the Veterans Memorial committee, have been planning for the celebration for some time.  They plan to dedicate the memorial, which is located near the Heron Lake Community Center.  The dedication will take place along with the Memorial Day program which will begin at 1:30 p.m. at the Community Center.

In addition to the Memorial Day address by Representative Tim Walz, the Heron Lake - Okabena High School Band and Choir will be performing.  Sydney Burns will be singing "The Star Spangled Banner."  Mahlon Iverson will be reciting "In Flanders Field." and Dale Hessmann will be singing "God Bless the USA."

The roll call of the deceased veterans, along with the Auxiliary and Legion Floral ceremonies will be part of the program.

Refreshments will be available following the program and are all welcome to attend the dedication and Memorial Day services.  The service will be held at the Heron Lake community center.

In addition to the dedication ceremony, serveral class and family reunions are planned for that weekend.

The lot neighboring the Heron Lake Community Center was cleared for the Veterans Memorial in November of 2011, and the stones were prepared and put into place in the fall of 2014.

Since that time, members of the committee have been finalizing plans for the dedication ceremony, in addition to preparing the Memorial book which will be offered.  Short biographies of those listed on the wall and photos of the veterans are included in the book.  This will be available for sale prior to the ceremony and at the dedication.  Watch for complete details about the event as the date approaches.
